The Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) is proud to announce that 77 members of the Marshalltown High School (MHS) Class of 2025 have earned the prestigious Iowa Seal of Biliteracy, awarded by the Iowa Department of Education.
The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other world language. To qualify, students must meet state proficiency standards on an English assessment and successfully complete a recognized world language exam. This achievement promotes the pursuit of biliteracy, values language diversity, prepares students for success in a global workforce, and honors the rich cultural heritages within our community.
Biliteracy goes beyond bilingualism. While bilingual individuals can communicate orally in two or more languages, biliterate individuals demonstrate strong, balanced skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing across multiple languages.
The number of students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy this year has increased compared to last year. Students demonstrated proficiency in the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, French, Karen, and Polish.
“Earning the Seal of Biliteracy brings academic and social advantages,” said Rachel Inks, English Learner and Migrant Program Coordinator. “It helps colleges and universities identify and award credit for high-level language skills and celebrates the linguistic and cultural strengths of our students. It also fosters greater understanding and connection within our diverse student body.”
"We are incredibly proud of these students for achieving the Seal of Biliteracy," said MHS Principal Justin Boliver. "Their commitment to mastering multiple languages shows outstanding perseverance and academic excellence. This achievement equips them with valuable skills that will open doors to future opportunities and showcases the rich talents within our Bobcat community."
Seniors who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy will be honored at the Senior Awards Night on Thursday, May 29. They will also proudly wear a special medal during the Marshalltown High School Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, June 1.
