"Vanessa is always putting students first and listening to any issues they may have," said Jose Alvarez, who nominated Coronado. "She is also always encouraging students to be on time and speaks with them so nicely. She always goes out of her way to also to have students eat lunch with her and she makes every student feel wanted. Many students have mentioned that because of her they always feel welcomed and happy to attend school."

Why did you decide join the Marshalltown Community School District?

In 2003, I started working with MCSD, as I had just moved to Marshalltown. I worked for 18 years and left briefly, but decided to return to MCSD because I enjoyed my time here as a Bilingual Specialist. I appreciate the opportunity MCSD gave me to participate in the adult career program with it’s partnership with William Penn University, and receive my BA in Education. I want to pay-it forward and be part of this great district who have helped me and my family immensely. I want to be able to help students and other staff the same way I was helped. I believe if I did it being as a wife, mom, and working then anyone can do it.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of the Bobcat community?

I have BOBCAT PRIDE in me. My kids are proud BOBCATS. I greatly enjoy being part of this community and participating in a lot of the events and activities with my family. The amount of relationships and personal friendships I formed over the years are what I value and enjoy the most.

What about your role at MCSD surprises you?

What surprises me the most about my role is the ability to mentor, assist, and celebrate students in transforming their chronic attendance to excellent standing attendance. Fostering great relationships with both students and families to help them reach their future goals brings me joy.

In your opinion, what makes Marshalltown Community School District special?

In my opinion what makes MCSD special is all the different and diverse cultures we have. I enjoy learning about every different culture we have in the district. It amazes me how the kids speak different languages, growing, and come together to celebrate everyone's triumphs.

What does it mean to you to be a Bobcat?

Being a Bobcat means to inspire others and being courageous all while becoming the best version of one self. The more you inspire others, the more everyone tries to be the best version of themselves! That's what its all about being a BOBCAT!
