WAVERLY — The Marshalltown boys’ cross country team finished 13th out of 35 teams at the Dan Huston/Steve Johnson Invitational on Saturday at the Wartburg College Max Cross Country Course, led by a third-place finish for junior Preston Johnson.

Johnson clocked in with a time of 15 minutes, 8.0 seconds, trailing only Caanan Dunham of Pella (14:54.4) and Keegan Decker of Iowa City Liberty (15:04.0). Bobcat senior Carter Nunn was just outside of the top 10, taking 11th in 16:08.9.

Myles Goldman came in 98th in 17:53.2, Isacc Ceniceros was 116th in 18:09.6, and Kade Randall was 119th in 18:11.8 to round out the Bobcats’ scoring runners, each of them finishing with season-best times.

Indianola won the mega-meet with just 70 points, followed by Pella (119) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (135). Marshalltown totaled 332 points to finish behind Mount Vernon-Lisbon (311) and ahead of Storm Lake (365).

South Tama senior Barrett Jesina competed as well, finishing 25th for the Trojans in a time of 16:37.8.

On the girls’ side, Marshalltown finished 24th out of 25 scoring teams with 598 points. The Bobcats came in behind Waverly-Shell Rock (561) but ahead of Park Hill, Mo. (633).

MHS was led by Anessa Morrison, who finished 91st in a time of 22:15.9. Mallory Meyeraan ran to 101st (22:43.2), followed by Lily Johnson (135th, 24:04.2), Mattea Wright (165th, 25:14.5) and Sophia Valdez Chavez (183rd, 26:34.8).
