BOONE — Both Boone and Marshalltown advanced to their respective regional girls tennis finals in the spring.
Only the Toreadors brought back a bulk of their lineup.
Boone remained undefeated in the inaugural fall season of girls tennis in Iowa, beating the visiting Bobcats as well as Des Moines Hoover to sweep Thursday’s triangular at McHose Park in Boone.
The host Toreadors (6-0) toppled Marshalltown 10-1 and handled Hoover 11-0, putting their experience on display across the lineup. The Bobcats beat Boone in the spring, 8-3, but graduated a great deal more than the Toreadors.
Marshalltown mowed down Hoover as well, 11-0, to close out the day with a split.
Boone returned five of six singles starters from the spring season and brought back three more players from its doubles rotation. The result was an outcome the Bobcats haven’t seen the likes of in quite some time.
The 10-1 setback was the first of its kind for Marshalltown since May 5, 2022, against West Des Moines Valley.
Marshalltown junior Kate Sandvick exacted some revenge to get the Bobcats their lone win of the dual, rallying to beat Livi Schneider 3-6, 6-0, (10-1) at the No. 1 singles spot.
The same duo met in the No. 2 position in their meeting this spring, which Schneider won in dramatic fashion, 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, (10-7).
“Kate battled really well for her win at singles, avenging a loss from last year,” said MHS head coach James Christensen. “Kaelyn Coleman played hard in her loss. She is learning a lot and has a bright future.”
Coleman had the most contested defeat in singles play, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Ally Thompson at No. 5.
Boone, however, swept all five doubles matchest. One of them went to a third-set super-tiebreak, but Grace Diggins and Taylor Bear just missed out on victory at the No. 4 spot. Returning doubles players Rozzie Stevenson and Michaella Anderson outlasted their Marshalltown counterparts, 6-4, 2-6, (10-8).
The Bobcats turned things around against winless Hoover, hammering the Huskies 11-0.
Sandvick led the charge with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Sylviah Ho, while Hanna Osgood got her first singles win of the season at No. 6 by beating Matilda Napier 6-0, 6-0.
Ellie Downs, Lilyia Christen, Coleman and Bear also scored singles victories.
In doubles play, the new pairing of Downs and Jorja Janssen won a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Coleman and Osgood got the win at No. 2. Diggins and Bear prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, while Trista Bratland and Ellison Wittkop blanked their No. 4 doubles foes, 6-0, 6-0.
The Bobcats are back in action today with the Hawkette Invite at 10 a.m. at the Ankeny Tennis Center. Marshalltown joins Indianola and Southeast Polk in attendance.
“We’ll have to up the intensity after the Hoover meet,” Christensen said. “Tough opponents and we will be down four of our top 12 girls.”
